THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SEIZURE AND EPILEPSY

Published on

Epilepsy or seizure? Are they the same? or they are different. Most often these two medical terms are used interchangeably but there is a difference.

The brain consists of billions of neurons that transmit electrical impulses in the brain. In certain instances, a neuron may misfire but also a group of neurons may misfire at the same time which may lead to consequences.

Seizure is therefore a sudden, disorganized electrical discharge in the brain causing muscle twitches and spasms, changes in sensation, mood, behavior or thought, or altered consciousness (Johns Hopkins Medicine).

The difference between seizures and epilepsy is that a seizure is a single occurrence whiles epilepsy is a neurological or medical condition with recurring seizures.
