EDUCATION ON MINOR DISORDERS OF PREGNANCY: HEARTBURNS

  1. Establish rapport (refer steps)
  2. Provide privacy and ensure client assume desired position
  3. Explain to client the need to attend antenatal clinic and procedures involved
  4. Explain the possible cause of the heartburn to her
  5. Advice client to reduce intake of fatty and spicy foods, caffeinated drinks
  6. Encourage her to eat small meals at frequent intervals but avoid excessive snacking
  7. Counsel her to avoid bending over or lying flat soon after meals
  8. Advise her to sleep with extra pillows (pop-up in bed; raise head end of bed)
  9. Sips of milk to neutralize the acid
  10. Prescribed antacids should be taken sparingly of in moderate amount
  11. Advice to her to get out of bed slowly

  13. Advice client to report to the clinic in case of severe heartburns
  14. Encourage client to ask questions and give appropriate answers
  15. Emphasize the need for client to adhere to information given
  16. Express appreciation of client for her cooperation
  17. Record and report all information in the Maternal and Child Health Book (Manual or Electronic)
  18. Advise to avoid alcohol intake or smoking
