The Coalition of Concerned Nurses and Midwives, an advocacy group in the health and nursing sector has petitioned the national president of Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association to call its regional Chairperson of the association in the central region to order. They said Mrs. Mercy Charway who is the regional Chairperson has been micromanaging the association without recourse to the constitution of the association and the image of the association is dying in the region.

They accused the woman of being autocratic in decision making. That instead of allowing the regional council which is the highest decision-making body in the association to decide, she goes about doing everything despite the complaints of the executives. That the woman has defied the constitution and running the association like her own business.
The group further lament that all decisions pertaining to this year’s GRNMA regional election in the region have been hijacked by the woman. That she formed the vetting committee without the knowledge of the regional council and tried to change the original vetting report issued by the Chairperson of the vetting committee to disqualify 2 aspiring members of the chairmanship position so that her favorite can go unopposed. Other aspirants were also given frivolous petitions. CCNM says it believes all was masterminded by the woman to kick them out so that her favorite people can go unopposed.
CCNM stated in their petition that the chairperson has not issued any delegates list, yet she has singlehandedly given 13th February 2020 as the election date. She went ahead to state that she has given nurse managers and directors the opportunity to select delegates for the elections.
CCNM’s general secretary, Malcolm Ali in a statement described the move and actions by the woman as “alien, unconstrained and autocratic”.
The group stated that, there is no transparency in the election process which is a recipe for disaster since all other regions have a clear unambiguous roadmap to follow. But the Chairperson in the central region is keeping everything secret to herself.
CCNM has therefore given the national president to as a matter of urgency, intervene to ensure the region follows due process in the GRNMA constitution. Failure to ensure this by Friday 7th February 2020, the secretary says, they will consider court action as the next step.
