Establish rapport (refer procedure) and explain procedure to patient
Put patient in a desired position either sitting or lying down
Sit comfortably on a chair by patient’s side
Use language patient understands and speak audibly
Ensure enabling and relaxed environment
Maintain privacy and individuality of patient
Assess patient’s previous knowledge/level of awareness about condition
Build on patient’s knowledge about the condition with relevant scientific facts that will help with patient’s recovery
Explain to patient the rationale for treatment and possible outcome
Encourage patient to repeat what has been discussed for emphasis and clarity
Allow patient to ask questions and respond appropriately
Provide patient with pamphlets/flyers with clear simple message if available
Express appreciation to patient and relative(s)/significant other(s)
Document procedure in the nurses’ notes/patient’s folder
