- Urine dipsticks
- Pair of gloves
- Urine sample bottle
- Urine
- Catheter (if necessary)
- Mackintosh apron
STEPS #
- Establish rapport (refer steps)
- Explain procedure (refer steps)
- Teach client on how to obtain midstream urine
- Pass urethral catheter to obtain urine sample where necessary
- Put on mackintosh apron
- Perform hand hygiene and wear gloves
- Read instructions on reagent bottle before use
- Note quantity, colour and sediments of urine sample
- Smell urine for odour and note (offensive, fishy, fruity/acetone smell etc.)
- Pick one strip of reagent and dip into urine
- Remove strip immediately and tap the edge of strip against side of urine container
- Measure specific gravity of urine
- Read PH. of urine
- Compare test area closely with the corresponding colour chart on bottle
- Dispose off and decontaminate used items
- Perform hand hygiene
- Record and report findings to Officer in-charge
