THERE WAS NO NURSE IN THE “BABY HARVESTING/TRAFFICKING” EXPOSÉ BY EOCO AND MEDICAL AND DENTAL COUNCIL – NURSING AND MIDWIFERY COUNCIL.

On 20th January, the Medical and Dental Council and the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) released a joint Press Statement on an investigation involving medical practitioners, nurses, social welfare officers, and other persons who were involved in the unlawful activities of “baby harvesting” and “human trafficking”.

According to the press statement by the Medical and Dental Council and the Economic and Organized Crime Office, three nurses were arrested together with one doctor Hope Mensah Quashie who works with the 37 Military Hospital. The supposed nurses were believed to be working in the doctor’s private clinic namely, Susan Clinic. It was alleged that the doctor sold a baby boy to the investigating team for an amount of Thirty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH₵30,000) in October 2020.

This incident raised concerns in the nursing and midwifery fraternity prompting the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana (N&MC) for further investigations. Investigations by the Nursing and Midwifery Council revealed that no Nurse or Midwife was involved in the incident. The supposed “nurses” have not been licensed to practice in Ghana. However, the council is yet to release an official statement.
