As the number of positive cases of COVID-19 increases, more nurses and midwives are getting infected each day. According to the secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Mr. David Tenkorang-Twum, as of June 3rd, about 168 nurses and midwives have been infected with the virus. These are nurses in both public and private medical facilities across the country. He made this known on Joy FM. This number could increase since more are yet to be tested.

Mr. David Tenkorang-Twum made an argument that people are reporting to hospitals with the disease either symptomatic or asymptomatic and because there is no on-the-spot diagnosis, they are admitted onto the ward as an ordinary case and before you realize they have tested positive. “The figures keep rising and we are not surprised because they [authorities] are not listening to us. But, until we change the narrative or the way we manage the patients, we are going to have a lot of nurses, doctors, and other supporting staff getting infected,” he said.

He also appealed that nurses and midwives who are pregnant should be allowed to stay away from work since they are susceptible.

Ghana currently has 11,964 confirmed cases with 4258 recoveries and 54 deaths.
