GOVERNMENT AGREES ON A 15% COST OF LIVING ALLOWANCE (COLA) FOR PUBLIC WORKERS

The Government of Ghana, represented by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Ministry of Finance (MoF), Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations (MELR), Ministry of Education and Ministry of National Security and Organized Labour comprising identifiable workers Unions and Associations within the Public Service of Ghana came into an agreement concerning the payment of the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA).

This come after various teacher unions embarked on strike action after the government failed to pay the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Ghana Medical Association (GMA), and other health unions also threatened to embark on a strike action if the government does not pay them 20% Cost of Living Allowance (COLA).

The government and public service workers have thus come to an agreement on 14th July 2022 with the following conditions:

1. That the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) will be paid at a rate of 15% of base pay.

2. That the effective date for payment of the COLA is 1st July 2022.

3. That all industrial actions underway and threats of same will be called off

immediately and that Labour would return to work.
