The General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum has indicated that it is illegal for the government to place an embargo on the sale of clearance forms. The general secretary made this known by speaking on a TV3 show.
Ghana recently was place placed on the Red List by the United Kingdom, which means they will not be doing active recruitment from Ghana and other countries. However, nurses can apply for employment themselves.
According to the General Secretary, the country being placed on the red list will not prevent nurses from going to seek greener pastures since most of them apply themselves. He continued that he is not happy that nurses are leaving but there are certain push factors such as poor service conditions and salary.
He raised concern over the embargo placed by the Ministry of Health on the sale of clearance forms since November 2022. He believed that that is not the solution for the massive exit of nurses but rather the government should innovative and practical ways to retain the nurses.
