CARE OF THE HANDS AND FEET OF PSYCHIATRIC PATIENT

      1. Two jugs of water (cold and hot)
      2. Bowl
      3. Receptacle for used water

STEPS #

  1. Establish rapport (refer procedure)
  2. Explain procedure to patient
  3. Provide privacy
  4. Prepare and send trolley to the appropriate place
  5. Put patient in a desired position
  6. Cover the working area with protective material
  7. Mix water in a bowl to a desired temperature (30-400C) using a bath thermometer/the back of your hand/elbow
  8. Put bowl of warm water on the protective material
  9. Wet fingers in the bowl of warm water and trim finger nails
  10. Put all nail clippings into a receiver
  11. Put hands into the bowl of warm water and scrub nails gently with nail brush
  12. Wash hands thoroughly using soap and sponge, rinse and dry
  13. Wet and trim toe nails across
  14. Put feet into the bowl of warm water and wash thoroughly using soap and sponge
  15. If feet are very dirty, use nail brush to scrub them
  16. Apply petroleum jelly to hands and feet
  17. Express appreciation to patient and direct him/her to the next activity
  18. Remove screen, clear trolley, decontaminate used items and perform hand hygiene
  19. Document procedure, report any abnormalities and indicate patient’s level of co-operation in the nurses’ notes/patient’s folder
