STEPS #
- Welcome client, family and offer a comfortable seat
- Sit near client, family and introduce yourself
- Find out client’s name and title, and use it when addressing her
- Speak to client using simple and clear language that client understands
- Assure client that all conversations will remain confidential
- Ask client about the presence of significant others/family member during conversation
- Establish eye contact with the client during the interaction
- Enquire from client the purpose of her visit (If applicable)
- Explain to client what she should expect from you as a midwife
- Encourage client to talk and express her feelings and listen attentively
- Encourage client to open up in conversation by clarifying and paraphrasing statements
- Use open ended statement to enable client express her issues well
- Show consistency in approaching the client
- Maintain a relaxed attitude when interacting with client to let her know that you have time for her
- Demonstrate firmness in dealing with inappropriate and behaviour by the client if any
- Express appreciation to client for her cooperation
