STEPS #

  1. Establish rapport (refer procedure) and explain procedure to patient and relative(s) / significant other(s)
  2. Put patient in a desired position either sitting or lying down
  3. Sit comfortably on a chair by patient’s side
  4. Use language patient understands and speak audibly
  5. Ensure enabling and relaxed environment
  6. Maintain privacy and individuality of patient
  7. Involve patient and relative(s)/ significant other(s)
  8. Assess patient’s previous knowledge
  9. Show type of medication(s) to patient
  10. Inform patient about method of medication(s) administration
  11. Instruct patient on the dosage of medication(s) to take at a time
  12. Explain action(s) of the medication(s)
  13. Describe the desired effect(s) as well as the side effect(s) of the medication (s)
  14. Instruct patient to report to hospital when adverse side effect(s) occur
  15. Teach patient how to store medication(s) at home safely
  16. Explain the importance of review/follow-up care
  17. Encourage patient to ask questions and respond appropriately
  18. Express appreciation to patient and relative(s)/ significant other(s)
  19. Document procedure in the nurses’ notes/patient’s folder
